The following prices have been set forth and agreed to by the Blackwell Merchant's Associaton, comprising of the vast majority of the village's skilled craftsmen and women. A charter for this organization will be posted shortly, detailing its policies and requirements for membership, as well as the advantages of seeking such. These pricing conventions have been designed to encourage fair competition between the town's merchants and artisans, and to finally bring under control the wildly fluctuating cost of goods that the town has been suffering from.
-----------------------------------------------
CURRENCY EXCHANGE:
10 Copper Coins = 1 Gold Coin

METAL INGOTS
Iron = 0.5 gold per ingot.
Dull Copper = 1 gold per ingot.
Shadow Iron = 2 gold per ingot.
Copper = 3 gold per ingot.
Bronze = 5 gold per ingot.
Gold = 10 gold per ingot.
Agapite = 12 gold per ingot.
Verite = 15 gold per ingot.
Valorite = 25 gold per ingot.

LEATHER STRIPS
Plain = 0.5 gold per strip.
Spined = 2 gold per strip.
Barbed = 4 gold per strip.

MISCELLANEOUS
Diamonds = 10 gold per gem.
Gems = 5 gold per gem.
Glass Bottles = 3 gold per bottle.
Plain Cloth = 0.5 gold per yard.
Reagents = 0.5 gold per plant.
Wood = 0.2 gold per board.

LABOR RATES
+10% of material cost.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Example: A platemail gorget requires ten ingots to make. Therefore, the material cost of a Dull Copper Platemail Gorget is 10 gold pieces. You create an Exceptional quality gorget, increasing its value by 20%, boosting it to 12 gold pieces total. You then apply a personal labor rate of 5 gold per item, bringing the total price of the item to 17 gold.

Aye aye. I do think that a solution to the problem of not being able to re-lock boxes is needed. I actually really dislike the fact that I can't cover my tracks by locking the boor behind me on my way out, and its why I haven't really done anything independently with Mary in a while. She's mostly just picking things on request now, because I feel bad OOC leaving someone's door and chests wide open. If I've ever stolen a spare key, its so I could use it to re-lock the chest after skimming some valuables off the top.

Maybe a system whereby you can make a key to fit an unlocked chest.
Or an automatic re-lock after a certain period of time.
Or a limit that you can only loot through a chest if you were the one that picked it.

Any of these would go a long way towards preventing the stealing frenzy that seems to spark whenever something is left unlocked.

Hrm. Perhaps a rule whereby you can only rob someone if there's someone currently online? Maybe even if -they- are currently online? Creates a hint of danger for the thief, and increases the likelihood of them noticing and generating RP from it before everyone and their mother realizes their crates are open and enters a stealing frenzy.

I've actually had two people complain to me in the past day that they couldn't find a tinker.

I didn't rob you, so that wasn't part of any sort of nefarious gold culling scheme. That was just someone being a bad person IC.

As for non-crafters not being able to make money; Have You Tried? Think outside the box. What skills do you have that people might pay you for? Offer your services as a bodyguard, or pressure the militia to actually pay you. Go gather a ton of hides and return them. Take up a life of crime, raging against the world that's clearly mistreating you. Sell your silver weapon to someone for a huge sum - silver is exceedingly rare in this setting. Take up fishing. Form a Hunters' Guild or something.

The possibilities are endless, you're just too focused ont he obvious. tongue

I also disagree with the notion of armor dropping on monsters. The entire point of removing that was to force people to actually do business with the local craftsmen, and to maintain a high level of demand for quality equipment. The big problem on Europa was that everyone could just repair their armor repeatedly, and it'd last them -years- unless they got wiped in Karnaugh or something, and even then there was insurance as a parachute.

A big theme of this shard is meant to be desperation. Resources should be scarce, people should be forced to make hard decisions about how to spend them. That means that not only does someone passing things out for free because they've macro'd up 10,000 of it harm the integrity of the setting, it discourages other people from running their own businesses in a realistic and RP-intensive way. This is the main reason that I created characters like Samuel Baker and Mary Carleton - to control the quantity of goods in the system, and force people to continue buying things.

This is also the reason I'm opposed to secure storage. With the ability to trap chests that are locked down, the need for GM Lockpicking to get through a locked door (at a loss rate of 9 picks per door), and the ability to make and place decoys and mines, I see no reason to provide a 100% secure storage system.

Try using wall tiles already in use in the village, just to keep the general theme. tongue

People of Blackwell,
It has come to my attention that during the past few days, two members of my household have been attacked by Nujel'mian slavers calling themselves the Emerald Sands Trading Company, and that by your efforts both were saved. I would like to formally extend my gratitude to you all. However, it is also clear that no one in this village will be safe until these degenerate foreigners are driven from our lands. To this end, I am placing a bounty upon the heads of these wicked men. One hundred gold per head will be awarded for the capture and delivery, dead or alive, of these slavers, with a further bonus of one hundred gold if all three are caught.
I would have vengeance on those who have sought to harm my kin.

We're going to start telling stories about how Torrak's greatest rival defeated himself with a contraption known as the Goatbow.

Witness the power of our fully functioning storage space!

I really don't see the problem with it being difficult to craft an exceptional piece of what is already the most protective item in the game.

@Erjana: Make sure you have your options set up to display gains. >_>

Exceptional objects and people should -be- the exception, not the rule.

I think limited safe storage is a good thing, as Craystor says, he and Derek just walked off with 1000 gold, just stop and think of the weight of gold and size of a coin then think how much 1000 of them would weight ....... as I said previously some rules for stealing from other people setting a limit to what you can steal ic due to the weight, size, bulk of items would be good but secure storage helps keep it ic and avoid the hard feelings of being screwed over for an unrealistic amount ooc

say 50 - 100 gold is approximately a gold bar and the average person would struggle to lift 2 or 3 gold bars IRL I don't think its unreasonable to say a limit of 1 or 2 hundred gold max each thief can take from each person same with ingots, boards, logs, leather i think realistic IC limits to what you can take would both help stop people feeling completely smegged due to loosing everything and stop thieves from just stealing everything they want at everyone else's expense.

personally I  would never take more than 100 gold and never take so much as to leave a char with less than 100 so if they have 50 I would pass them over if they have 150 I would take 50 if they have 200 or more I would take 100 but that's my choice as a nice person to keep the stealing IC with the 100 limit and also not take the last little bit someone has so that they cant get back on their feet

See, the issue here is that the value of gold doesn't really pair up well to what it'd realistically weigh. I'm not going to steal something if stealing it won't matter - neither to myself, nor the person being stolen from - because it's chump change that just happens to be all I can realistically carry. This has always been one place where suspension of disbelief comes in. Most people carry stuff around in their packs that they could never carry. No one could carry dozens of ingots worth of ore on a long hike back from the mountains, but it happens and no one blinks.

If you really need to reason through it, say that the coins come in different denominations. That there's, say, a 100 Crown coin, and that if someone is walking around with 2,000 gold in their pocket then they must have several of those.

As far as I know, the only person currently capable of breaking a lockbox is Mary Carleton, and no one is currently capable of picking a locked door. We recently made doing so require GM Lockpicking, but if someone would prefer that they be completely unpickable I see no issue with it. We could also change the Bank over to a proper one, but (as you suggest) cut the capacity of the box down by a lot. Make it more like a safe deposit box.

Beyond that, my only advice is to play it how you'd really play it. Don't get angry OOC if your stuff gets nabbed - get angry IC. Remember that you're free to enforce the IC consequences of IC actions. If someone steals from you and you know it, and the guards are either A) Not doing anything about it, B) Not doing enough about it, or C) Actively assisting in it, then you should behave accordingly.

The bottom line is that I'm loathe to make anything 100% safe.

#69 Re: Out Of Character Board » Feature Requests » 2013-07-20 05:33:07

@Erjana: I'd blame that on overhunting. The spawners are set to replace them at a rate of 1 per X period of time, so if someone clears the whole forest at once, the next few hours are going to be pretty difficult on anyone that tries hunting after them.

@Althalus: I'm concerned that people will build mansions and/or giant white marble cubes, and that a lot of the empty space will get used up. I -like- empty space. So, we'll look into it but things aren't terrible the way they are. We'll see!

Deer aren't exactly known for their tendencies to stand around in huge clusters so you can shoot them more easily.

Yeah, that's a product of the wacky pre-AoS combat system as far as we've been able to tell.
